Mercedes-Benz ML Class
The Mercedes Benz ML-Class is set to spawn not only the next-generation G-Class above it, but also the new MLK-Class below it. The junior ML will compete head-on with the BMW X3.
Caught testing at Germany’s famed Nurburgring race circuit, the built-in-Bremen MLK has unitary body construction like the ML and will tilt more towards the ’sports’ rather than the ‘utility’ end of the SUV market – BMW’s X3 territory in other words. The MLK’s mini-ML design may suggest otherwise, but the new off-roader actually shares its architecture with the upcoming new C-Class, including its optional 4matic four-wheel drive system. MLK engines are likely to mirror those used in the new compact executive saloon, which will go on sale in late 2007, around the same time as the MLK. This suggests that the MLK is being developed alongside the latest C-Class, saving both time and R&D resources.
