Different specs of Toyota 4A series’ engines

4A = 1600cc 4th generation A series (see Corona AT151)
4A-F = with 16 valve (in Corolla AE92/SE Limited), twin cam single gear
4A-FE = with 16 valve and EFI (in Corolla AE101 and AE111)
4A-GE = with 16 valve and DOHC, double gear (first seen in AE86 and AW10MR-2)
4A-GEA = DOHC and EFI but with 20 valve and 4 throttle body
4A-GZE = DOHC, EFI and 16V, supercharged

The Toyota AE111 and Toyota AE101 which uses the 4AFE engine has many different tunings depending on which year it was produced. For AE101, year 92 to 95, it omes with 105PS to 109PS at 5600RPM, which the ECU is tuned without the presence of a cat converter. The california spec was as low as 102PS due to strict emmission laws. From 1996 to 1997, the 4AFE that is for the AE111 comes with 115PS at 6000rpm and the ECU is tuned with the cat converter. From 1998 onwards with the facelifted AE111, the intake manifold changed and I am not sure if the ECU has any changes which affects the power output.

If your 5AFE is manual, it is a very fuel economical gear ratios with Final Gear Ratio of 3.722 versus the 4AFE of 4.058 and the 5th gear ratio for 5AFE is at 0.725 versus 4AFE 0.812. What this means is that the 5AFE is not tuned for acceleration and cruise on the highway with lower rpm while the 4AFE has more pack on acceleration but higher rpm on cruising. For auto transmission, no difference on gear ratios for 4AFE and 5AFE. For the BT 20V, it is acceleration centric and on highway, is higher RPM that 4AFE (FGR = 4.312, 5th gear 0.812). So it is better to get the 6th speed BT 20V but I don’t have the data for the 6th gear ratio.
